How do you know when it's time to hire a business coach to support you? There's always a need for a coach — regardless if you're just starting to gain traction your firm, or you've been at it for a while.

But then you have to make sure you're hiring the right coach. And how are you supposed to know what to look for? How much you should pay? Where to find a coach you vibe with?

It can be overwhelming at first!

It can also open the door to massive, game-changing shifts in your firm that'll help you reach your next big goal.

In this blog, we'll explore:

  • What to look for in a coach BEFORE you sign on with one

  • How to get the most out of working with a coach

  • How you can get 1:1 coaching tailored to your firm

I've spent YEARS building multiple businesses and learning things the hard way, which is why I'm such a huge fan of coaching. Because every time I've worked with a coach, they've helped me overcome a hurdle in my business. But there's a secret to being a successful coaching client, so let's get into the details!

How To Choose The Right Coach For Your Needs

If you think you're ready for coaching, there's a few things I recommend you do before signing on the dotted line.

Hire a Coach To Help You Overcome A Specific Problem

Some coaches are general business coaches, but I prefer to hire someone with direct experience in what I'm struggling with at the moment.

For example, if you need help with hiring your first team member, you probably have some questions like:

  • Am I ready to hire someone?

  • Where do I find them?

  • How can I streamline the hiring process?

  • How much training should I provide?

  • What should I include in the job description?

And the list could go on and on!

So in this example, you'll probably want to hire a coach with specific experience in hiring remote team members and delegating work to them.

Or maybe you're trying to be more efficient in your firm, and you need support with overhauling all your systems and processes. In that case, look for someone who's helped other firm owners implement systems in their firms to help them streamline and scale.

Don't just hire the first coach you meet.

It's great to ask around for referrals first, just in case another bookkeeping business owner you know has worked with a coach and loved their experience. Asking around is a great place to start! But don't forget to do your homework first and really make sure they're a good fit for you.

If you've never worked with them before...

  • Get on their email list or download their free resources

  • Slide into their DM's and exchange a few voice notes.

  • Email them and ask for a quick chat to make sure you have chemistry.

One of the best ways to decide if a coach would be a good fit for you is to buy one of their courses, workshops, or join their program. If you're not sold on 1:1 coaching yet, or just want to get a feel for their expertise/teaching style, this is an awesome way to get in their world!

Go With Your Gut

Finally, just choose the coach that feels like the best fit for your current season of business. As long as you can afford the coach that you feel most connected to, it's probably going to be a valuable experience!

What 1:1 Coaching IS and What It Isn't

1:1 business coaching is meant to empower you to break through the bottlenecks you experience while running a business. But bottlenecks will never go away because, with each new phase of growth, you'll need to focus more energy on one aspect of the business or another.

Most coaches offer a package that lasts a certain amount of time, with a specific number of sessions or amount of access to them. This is 100% on purpose!

When you're given an open-ended amount of time with little to no structure, you might not take advantage of their expertise and end up without the results you want. So 1:1 coaching is about taking ACTION toward the goals you've set for yourself, with an expert in your corner.

Coaching is NOT the opportunity to ask your coach to do work for you. They're not there to set up your CRM or tell you who to pick from a pile of applicants. Instead, leverage their experience to support you in making decisions and planning your next steps!

How To Get 1:1 Coaching From Me, Alyssa Lang (aka the Workflow Queen)

If you're a bookkeeping or accounting business owner considering a coach, you've got some options! I've built a six-figure bookkeeping and tax firm, a seven-figure education business for other bookkeeping firm owners, and started a bookkeeping and consulting firm which quickly grew into a success.

The reason (or at least ONE of the reasons) I was able to accomplish all of this was because I took advantage of 1:1 coaching.

Here's what's included when you sign up for 1:1 coaching with me:

  • 3 months access to coaching

  • (2) 90-minute calls - 1 to kick off the quarter, 1 to conclude

  • 1:1 coaching calls (60-minutes each) (weekly or biweekly depending on your package)

  • Coaching topics tailored to your specific needs

I only accept a small number of coaching clients per quarter for this high-touch coaching package. It's something I absolutely love offering to other bookkeepers and accountants who want to go beyond learning what to do to make improvements in their business, systems, team and processes as a whole and get guidance and accountability.

When you sign up for coaching with me, you're saying YES to:

  • Taking action toward your goals

  • Implementing strategies

  • Keeping an open mind

  • Working through the discomfort of growth

My specialty (and straight-up passion!) is helping firm owners create repeatable systems and processes that help them be more efficient. I love using tech and automation to support those systems and improve the general operations of the firm. But I'm also ready to help you tackle the hurdles that come with building a team, delegating, and training them to create more ease in your firm — instead of adding more to your plate.

If you're interested in my 1:1 coaching package, I'd LOVE to see you apply! Use the button below to fill out the application and we'll be in touch within 48 business hours to chat about the next steps to see if we’re a good fit 👇
